Herculaneum was not buried by ash. It was sealed by a pyroclastic surge that carbonised wood, rope, bread and furniture rather than burning them away, which is why its second storeys still stand while Pompeii's mostly do not. The two cities died within eighteen hours of each other in the autumn of AD 79, yet they were never equals. Pompeii was a working commercial town of some 11,000 people, laid out on a grid of basalt paving, its walls scrawled with election slogans and tavern graffiti. Herculaneum was smaller, wealthier, coastal — a place of marble atria, mosaic nymphaea and villas facing the Bay of Naples. Excavation reversed their fortunes. Herculaneum was tunnelled first, from 1738, on the orders of Charles of Bourbon; Pompeii followed a decade later and proved easier to clear, and so became the site the world knows. Both cities carry UNESCO World Heritage status alongside Torre Annunziata, inscribed in 1997. Vesuvius, four kilometres north, is not extinct. That proximity gives any Pompeii and Herculaneum guided day tour a quality most ruins lack — the sense of a paused hour rather than a slow decline. Frescoes, kitchen counters, wheel ruts and dogs in mosaic form all read as interrupted. The Frecciarossa line from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, covering the distance in about seventy minutes, has made a same-day visit ordinary; a century ago it was an expedition.
